The water-goddess. She of the Jade-Skirt — the jade-green-and-blue iridescent water-surface as her clothing. Ruler of all surface-and-running-water — lakes, rivers, streams, springs, the sea. Ruler of the Fourth Sun, the previous cosmic-era, destroyed by the great flood that turned the surviving humans into fish. Sister-and-consort of Tlaloc — the watery-feminine-counterpart to his storm-masculine. Patroness of childbirth and of newborns: the canonical Mexica baptism-bathing-ceremony was performed in her name, with the infant ritually bathed by the midwife who prayed to Chalchiuhtlicue to *cleanse the infant of the impurities-of-the-blood-of-birth* and *welcome the new-tonal into the lake-of-the-living*. The OLDEST water-goddess in Mesoamerica.

Who Chalchiuhtlicue actually is

Chalchiuhtlicue (Nahuatl Chalchiuh-tlicue, "Jade-Her-Skirt" — from *chalchihuitl* "jade" + *cue* "skirt") is the *water-goddess* of the Mexica pantheon — the *lady of all surface-and-running-water*, the *jade-skirt-and-blue-green-blouse* deity whose clothing is *the iridescent water-surface itself*. She is the *sister-and-consort of Tlaloc* — the *watery-feminine-counterpart* to his *storm-masculine* — and the two are the *paired great-water-deities* of the Mexica pantheon (with Tlaloc presiding over *falling-rain-and-storm* and Chalchiuhtlicue over *standing-and-running surface-water*). She is the *ruler of the Fourth Sun* — the cosmic-era *preceding* the current Fifth Sun (which is Tonatiuh's) — and the Leyenda de los Soles narrates that her era was *destroyed by the great flood that turned the surviving humans into fish* (the Mexica flood-narrative, which has *direct iconographic-and-narrative parallels* to the Mesopotamian Atra-Hasis, the Hebrew Noah, and the Maya Popol Vuh flood-narratives — the *universal Mesoamerican-and-Old-World flood-narrative complex* whose comparative-mythology has been a major field of study since the late-19th century). She is the *patroness of childbirth and newborns* — the *canonical Mexica baptism-bathing-ceremony* (performed within four days of the infant's birth) was conducted in her name. The midwife would ritually bathe the infant in cold-water from a sacred-spring, praying to Chalchiuhtlicue: *"Receive this child, O Chalchiuhtlicue, and wash from him the impurities of the blood and the impurities of his mother's womb. Let his heart and his life be cleansed. Take from him all that is harmful. Give him a good and well-cleansed life."* The infant was then named — the *first-naming* (the diminutive-child-name, distinct from the *tonal-naming* by the day-keeper-priest at age 7 or after) — and a *miniature-bow-and-arrow (for boys) or weaving-batten (for girls)* was placed in the infant's hand, signifying the *vocational-direction* of the new-life. The Chalchiuhtlicue-bathing-ceremony is the most-direct Mexica-Catholic syncretism — the Spanish-Franciscan missionaries explicitly drew on the existing-Chalchiuhtlicue-baptism-tradition to introduce *Catholic baptism*, and the *Mexican-folk-Catholic baptism-tradition* of bathing the infant in church-blessed-water is the *direct-continuation of the pre-Hispanic Chalchiuhtlicue-rite* under Catholic vestment. The Chalchiuhtlicue-register is *the cosmic-feminine of surface-and-running-water* — the *lake of Texcoco* (on which Tenochtitlán was built), the *rivers of the Anáhuac basin*, the *sacred-springs* that fed the city's aqueducts, the *amniotic-water of the womb*, the *tears of weeping*, the *sweat of the warrior*, the *blood-and-water of childbirth*, the *bath-water of the newborn*, and the *all-water-as-the-feminine-cosmic-element*.

Iconography

A young woman in a *jade-green-and-blue iridescent skirt* (the *chalchiuhtlicue* — the jade-skirt-as-water-surface). A *blue-green blouse* (the *huipil-of-water*). A *crown of small jade-and-turquoise mosaic* (the headdress-of-the-water-jewels). She is often depicted with *running-water streaming from her body* (from her skirt, from her hands, from her mouth) — the *cosmic-source-of-all-surface-water*. She sometimes carries a *spindle-whorl* (the water-spiral) or a *reed-bundle* (the marsh-vegetation). Her sacred animals: the *snake* (the river-snake), the *frog* (the marsh-singer), the *fish* (the surviving-fourth-sun-humans), the *blue-heron* (the wading-shore-bird). Her sacred direction: west (the direction-of-water in the Mexica cosmology, where the sun sets-into-the-ocean). Her sacred color: jade-green and blue-green (the *chalchihuitl* color-complex). Her sacred temple: paired with Tlaloc throughout the Mexica ceremonial-precinct, with a particular shrine at the *Tlamatzincalco* (in the Templo Mayor precinct) and at sacred-springs throughout the Anáhuac basin. The *great Chalchiuhtlicue statue* (large basalt figure at the National Museum of Anthropology, Mexico City) is the canonical sculptural representation.

How to invoke Chalchiuhtlicue

Chalchiuhtlicue is the *invocation-of-cleansing-and-fertility-water* — called by midwives at every birth (the bathing-ceremony), by parents-and-grandparents at the naming-of-the-infant, by anyone undertaking a *water-related-undertaking* (a sea-journey, a river-crossing, a spring-pilgrimage, a swim), by anyone needing *cleansing* (ritual-purification, emotional-cleansing, the washing-away of past-trauma), by anyone facing the *jade-skirt-flood* that ended the Fourth Sun (the cosmic-recognition that *some eras end in water*, and that the only-surviving posture is *becoming-fish, accepting the transformation*). Offer: jade or turquoise stones (the *chalchihuitl* — her sacred color-stones), copal incense, fresh-flowers floated on water, the *first-water-of-the-spring* (the seasonally-first-rain-of-the-year), the bathing-water of the newborn. The canonical invocation is the Nahuatl bathing-prayer of the midwife (preserved in the Florentine Codex Book VI): *"Receive this child, O Chalchiuhtlicue, Lady of the Jade-Skirt, and wash from him the impurities of the blood and the impurities of his mother's womb. Cleanse his heart and his life. Take from him all that is harmful. Give him a good and well-cleansed life."* Especially called by *midwives, parents of newborns, anyone undergoing-a-water-related-transition* (a move-to-a-coastal-city, the start-of-a-swim-practice, the recovery-from-a-flood-or-drowning-related-trauma), by *anyone whose era is ending in water* (the relationship-being-flooded, the project-being-washed-out, the life-chapter-being-cosmically-cleansed-by-tears). The Chalchiuhtlicue-prayer is *receptive* — one offers the *thing-to-be-cleansed* and *waits for the jade-skirt to flow over it*, not demanding-when-or-how.

In love

Chalchiuhtlicue in love is the *cleansing-and-fertility partner* — the one whose presence is the *jade-skirt water-surface* in which the partner *can be bathed-of-impurities and emerge-renewed*. The Chalchiuhtlicue-partner is the *midwife-of-the-relationship* — the one whose *first-act with any new-arrival in the relationship* is to *bathe-it-in-water*, cleanse it of the *impurities-of-the-blood-of-birth*, and *welcome it into the lake-of-the-living*. The shadow is the Chalchiuhtlicue-partner whose *jade-skirt has become the great-flood* that ended the Fourth Sun — the partner whose *cleansing-water* has become the *destructive-deluge* that turns-the-survivors-into-fish (the relationship-ending-flood-of-tears, the catastrophic-emotional-water-event that *changes the species* of those-who-survive). The other shadow: the partner who *refuses to be bathed* — who has *organized themselves to never enter the jade-skirt water* (the never-cleansed, the never-renewed, the never-bathed-as-newborn), and is therefore *bringing the impurities-of-every-previous-life-chapter into every-new-arrival* without the *Chalchiuhtlicue-cleansing-pause* between chapters.

In work

Chalchiuhtlicue in work is the *cleansing-and-baptism* function of the institution. The Chalchiuhtlicue-leader is the *midwife-of-new-arrivals* — the figure whose *first act with any new hire* is the *symbolic bathing-and-welcoming*, cleansing them of the *impurities-of-the-previous-workplace*, and *welcoming them into the lake-of-the-current-team*. Every healthy onboarding-process has a Chalchiuhtlicue-element. The shadow is the Chalchiuhtlicue-leader whose *cleansing-water has become destructive-flood* — the leader whose *purification-rituals* have become *purges*, whose *baptism-ceremonies* have become *trial-by-water*. The other shadow: the institution that has *no Chalchiuhtlicue function* — no welcoming-bath-of-cleansing-the-newcomer-from-previous-impurities, no symbolic-acknowledgment-of-the-passage-from-outside-to-inside — and in which *every newcomer brings the impurities-of-their-previous-life into the team without ritual-cleansing*, gradually accumulating *institutional-toxicity* that no single decision-can-address because the *missing-rite is at the moment-of-arrival*.

The gift

Chalchiuhtlicue gives the *jade-skirt cleansing-water*. The gift is the *bathing-of-the-newborn* — the moment when whatever-is-newly-arrived in your life (a relationship, a child, a project, a chapter) is *ritually-bathed*, *cleansed of the impurities-of-its-arrival*, and *welcomed into the lake-of-the-living*. To receive Chalchiuhtlicue is to receive the *chalchihuitl* — the jade-green-stone whose color is *the color-of-life-water*, the recognition that *water is the cosmic-element-of-cleansing-and-fertility* and that *both functions are inseparable* (you cannot have *fertility-without-cleansing*, you cannot have *cleansing-without-fertility*). The gift is also the *flood-acceptance* — the recognition that *some eras end in water*, and that the only-surviving posture is *becoming-fish, accepting the transformation, allowing the cosmic-cleansing-flood to change the species-of-the-survivor*. The gift is the *amniotic-recognition* — every life begins in the *jade-skirt-of-the-womb*, every life ends with the *return-to-the-water*, and the *between-time on land* is *just the brief-walk-between-two-waters*.

The shadow

Chalchiuhtlicue has been *almost-entirely-syncretized into Catholic baptism* in post-conquest Mexico — the Mexican-folk-Catholic tradition of *bathing the infant in church-blessed-water* is the *direct-continuation* of the pre-Hispanic Chalchiuhtlicue-rite under Catholic vestment, and the Spanish-Franciscan missionaries explicitly drew on the existing-Chalchiuhtlicue-baptism-tradition to introduce Catholic baptism. This *unusually-clean syncretism* (most Mexica deities were *destroyed-rather-than-syncretized*) is itself the shadow: Chalchiuhtlicue *survived* by being *renamed* — every Mexican infant baptized in a Catholic church is *also being bathed by Chalchiuhtlicue*, but *without knowing it*, and the *cosmic-feminine of surface-and-running-water* has been *erased from explicit-religious-consciousness* even as the *rite continues unbroken*. The further shadow: the *flood-narrative of the Fourth Sun* — the great water-disaster that turned the surviving humans into fish — has been *erased from the Mexican national-consciousness* in favor of the *Christian Noah-narrative*, even though the *Mexica flood-narrative predates the Christianization by centuries and has direct cosmogonic-cultural-roots in the basin-of-Mexico's actual hydrological-history* (the Anáhuac basin's lakes and the historic 1629-floods of Mexico-City are *Tlaloc-and-Chalchiuhtlicue events*). The deepest shadow: the *modern Mexico-City water-crisis* — Mexico City is among the most-water-stressed major cities in the world, with the Anáhuac basin's lake-system *largely-destroyed* by Spanish-colonial drainage and modern over-pumping of aquifers; the Chalchiuhtlicue-cosmology of *abundant-jade-skirt-surface-water* has been *catastrophically-falsified* by 500 years of hydrological destruction, and any modern Chalchiuhtlicue-invocation is *both prayer and lament* over the *cosmic-water-feminine* who has been *desiccated by the city-built-on-her-lake*. The further shadow: the *feminist-spirituality flattening* of Chalchiuhtlicue into a generic "water-goddess archetype" has erased the *specifically-Mexica theological-and-ritual specificity* of her cult (the baptism-rite, the Fourth-Sun-flood narrative, the Tlaloc-paired cosmology). The contemporary shadow: the *climate-crisis worsening* of Mexico-City's water-situation is producing *new neo-Chalchiuhtlicue invocations* in some indigenous-rights and environmental-justice movements, raising the question of whether *the cosmic-feminine-of-water* can be honored *in a desiccated city built on her destroyed lake*.

  1. Where is my life asking for a *Chalchiuhtlicue-level cleansing-bath* — a *jade-skirt-flowing-over-the-newly-arrived* that I have not yet performed (a new-relationship un-baptized, a new-project not-yet-ritually-welcomed, a new-chapter started without the cleansing-pause), and what would *the bathing-ceremony* actually look like?
  2. Where am I in the Fourth-Sun-flood narrative — what *era of my life is ending in water* (the relationship-being-flooded-by-tears, the project-being-washed-out, the life-chapter-being-cosmically-cleansed), and have I begun *the becoming-fish* (the species-changing-transformation that surviving the cosmic-cleansing-flood requires)?
  3. Whose Chalchiuhtlicue have I refused to recognize — what *cosmic-feminine-of-surface-water* in my life (a mother, a grandmother, a midwife-figure, the body-of-water-near-my-home) has been *quietly bathing-everything-newly-arrived* without acknowledgment, and what would *honoring-the-bathing-without-which-no-cleansing-happens* look like?
