Loneliness · the 3 isolation-remedies · 21 of 38
For talkativeness and inability to be alone. Bach's remedy for the lonely heart that cannot bear silence.
What Heather actually treats
Heather is Bach's remedy for the talker who cannot stop. The person who buttonholes strangers at parties. The friend who fills every silence with their own concerns. The colleague whose conversations are monologues. Bach saw the Heather state as deep loneliness expressed paradoxically as over-presence: the Heather person cannot bear to be alone, so they overflow onto others — which drives the others away, deepening the loneliness. The remedy returns the capacity to be alone with the self, which is the only thing that makes good company possible.
The state it meets
Compulsive talking, mostly about oneself. Cannot bear silence. Strangers buttonholed. Conversations become monologues. The need to be the center of attention. Drains others without noticing.
The shift it brings
The capacity to listen. The ability to be alone without panic. Self-company becomes nourishing. Conversations become exchanges. Others stay rather than retreat.
In love
Heather in love is the partner whose share of conversation has crowded the partner out — and who is therefore lonely in a relationship full of words. The work is to ask, listen, and bear the silence between responses.
In work
Heather in work is the colleague whose updates never end and who fills every meeting. The remedy supports the move to ratio — listening twice as much as speaking, in every interaction, for a defined period.
A 5-minute practice
For one full day, ask one question every time you would otherwise share. Then listen to the answer without redirecting back to yourself. Notice what people actually want to say when given the room.

3 key questions
- When I am alone, what arises that my talking has been keeping at bay — and would meeting it be worse than the loneliness of being avoided?
- In my last three conversations, what ratio of speaking to listening did I hold — and what would change if I reversed it?
- What would I want to be asked, if someone genuinely wanted to know — and could I become the person who asks others that question?
