Who Nabu actually is

Nabu (Akkadian Nabû, "the announcer/herald," from the Semitic root *nbʾ* "to announce" — the same root as the Hebrew *nāḇîʾ* "prophet" and the Arabic *nabī* "prophet") is the *god of writing, of the cuneiform stylus, of wisdom-by-script, and of the scribal-class*. His temple is the *Ezida* ("True House") at Borsippa — the *secondary holy city of Babylonia*, paired with Babylon as Borsippa-was-to-Nabu what Babylon-was-to-Marduk. The Borsippa ziggurat (the *Ezida-Etemenanki* — sometimes confused with the Babylon Etemenanki in popular accounts, and *both* have been speculatively-identified with the biblical Tower of Babel) is the canonical Nabu-architecture. The Nabu-register is *the cosmic-scribe* — the deity who *literally writes down what is decreed*, who *records the Tablet of Destinies on Marduk's behalf*, who is the *patron of every scribe* in a culture where the *scribal class* (the *dub-sar*) was the entire intellectual edifice of the civilization. Mesopotamian astronomy, mathematics (including the base-60 sexagesimal system we still use for clocks and angles), law (including the Code of Hammurabi), literature (including the Gilgamesh Epic and the Enuma Elish), medicine, divination, and the *MUL.APIN* astronomical compendium that codified the 12-sign zodiac — *all of this is Nabu's patronage*. The Mesopotamian scribe sat before his wet-clay tablet, inserted the *reed-stylus* into the clay to make the wedge-shaped *cuneiform* impressions, and *invoked Nabu* before beginning. The act of writing-itself was a *ritual*, and *every cuneiform tablet that survives* (and we have *hundreds of thousands* of them in museums worldwide) is a *small Nabu-offering*. In the Neo-Babylonian period (c. 700-500 BCE), Nabu *rose to a position rivaling or surpassing Marduk* in the royal-theology — the kings Nabonidus, Nebuchadnezzar II, and Nabopolassar all carried *theophoric Nabu-names*, and the royal hymns of this period are often *as much addressed to Nabu as to Marduk*. The biblical-prophet Isaiah, polemicizing against the fall of Babylon 539 BCE, names Nabu directly: *"Bel boweth down, Nebo stoopeth"* (Isaiah 46:1) — Bel-Marduk and Nebo-Nabu were the *two great gods* of Babylon, and the prophet polemicizes against both. *Mount Nebo* (in modern Jordan, the place where Moses-according-to-Deuteronomy-34 *climbed up, saw the Promised Land, and died and was buried*) is *named for the Mesopotamian god Nabu* — likely through the West-Semitic Aramaic transmission of the divine name into geographical-nomenclature centuries before the biblical narrative was composed. This is one of the most-startling-yet-unacknowledged biblical-Mesopotamian connections: the *place where Moses died* is *the mountain-of-the-Mesopotamian-scribe-god*. The Hebrew *nāḇîʾ* ("prophet") and Arabic *nabī* are *etymological cognates* of *Nabû* — they share the same Semitic root *nbʾ* ("to announce") — meaning that the *entire Hebrew-and-Islamic prophetic tradition* carries Nabu's linguistic root in its central technical term.

Iconography

A bearded god holding the *reed stylus* and the *clay tablet* (the canonical scribal-iconography). The *wedge-cuneiform sign* itself as Nabu's emblem. The *triangular-stylus* (the actual tool used to inscribe cuneiform). The Ezida temple at Borsippa. The *mušḫuššu* dragon (Nabu shares this with Marduk, his father — the dragon iconography depicted on the Ishtar Gate carries both Marduk-dragons and Nabu-dragons). His sacred animal: the *dragon* (shared with Marduk) and the *goat* (specifically Nabu's, the goat is the *patient-scribe-animal*). Colors: lapis-blue (the color of the cuneiform-tablet when freshly-wet-clay before drying), reed-tan (the color of the stylus and the dried tablet), gold (the royal-scribal register). The number 12. Sacred site: the Ezida at Borsippa, and through linguistic-descent, *Mount Nebo in modern Jordan*.

How to invoke Nabu

Nabu is called for *writing, study, intellectual-work, divination, and the recording-of-decrees*. Offer: fresh-clay tablet (the canonical Nabu-offering, even a small ceremonial one), reed stylus, the libation poured-on-the-tablet, fine-bread, beer. The invocation: *"Nabû, bēl ṭuppi, mār ašarēdu Marduk" — "Nabu, lord of the tablet, firstborn son of Marduk."* Especially called by *writers, scholars, scribes, mathematicians, astronomers, lawyers, doctors, diviners* — anyone whose work is *the recording-and-transmission of cosmic-knowledge*. Especially called by *students* at the beginning of study, by *judges* at the beginning of a written-verdict, by *astronomers* at the beginning of an astronomical observation, by *scribes-of-any-tradition* (including modern programmers, journalists, archivists, copyists, transcribers). The Mesopotamian *namburbi* incantations sometimes invoke Nabu as the *cosmic-scribe-who-records-the-petition* and *who-can-erase-the-previously-recorded-decree-of-evil-omen* — the canonical *Nabu-can-erase-what-was-written-and-rewrite-the-destiny* register. The new-year *akītu* festival included a *Nabu-procession from Borsippa to Babylon* — Nabu traveled by boat down the Euphrates to *visit his father Marduk* for the festival, the canonical *son-visits-father-on-the-New-Year* ritual.

In love

Nabu in love is the *scribe-husband-of-Tashmetum* register — the partner whose love-register is *the careful-recording-of-the-relationship*, the *patience-of-the-clay-tablet-being-written-on-with-a-stylus*. The Nabu-partner is the one who *remembers everything* (in a culture where *to remember was to record on the tablet*), who *makes the careful note*, who *consults the prior-tablet* when a conflict arises about what was previously-agreed. The shadow is the Nabu-partner whose recording has become *prosecution* — who has *built an archive of the partner's failures* and can *produce the dated-tablet of every grievance going back years*, the canonical *scribal-litigation* register that converts intimacy into a *legal-document-trail*. The other shadow: the Nabu-partner who has *erased what should not be erased* — the Mesopotamian Nabu *could-erase-the-tablet* (he holds the Tablet of Destinies, he can rewrite the decree), and the shadow-Nabu-partner has used this *editorial-power* to *rewrite the history of the relationship in their own favor*, gas-lighting through *unilateral revision of the shared record*.

In work

Nabu in work is the *scribal-and-recording* register — the figure whose function is *the careful documentation, the precise transcription, the codification of what was previously-only-oral*. The lawyer, the journalist, the historian, the documentarian, the archivist, the technical-writer, the programmer, the data-engineer. Nabu-energy is also the *Tablet-of-Destinies* register — the *cosmic-scribe who holds the document on which fates are written*, the *senior counselor whose memo determines the strategic-direction*. The shadow is the Nabu-leader whose archive has become *surveillance* — the institutional *recording-of-everything-the-staff-says-and-does* in a way that converts the *scribal-protection* function into a *Stasi-file* function. The other shadow: the Nabu-leader who has *erased the inconvenient tablet* — who has used the *editorial-power-of-the-cosmic-scribe* to *rewrite institutional history*, removing the records that would-have-implicated them, the canonical *Nabu-as-Winston-Smith-in-1984* shadow.

The gift

Nabu gives the *patient-scribal-recording*. The *clay-tablet-and-reed-stylus* that turns the *oral-and-ephemeral* into the *permanent-and-consultable*. The recognition that *what is written down endures* — and that *the act of writing-itself is a ritual-form of cosmic-engagement*. The *cosmic-scribe* register — the recognition that the *patient careful documentation of cosmic events* is itself a *form of ordering the cosmos*. To receive Nabu is to receive the *reed-stylus* — the *tool that converts the wet-clay-of-experience into the wedge-cuneiform-of-record*. Nabu also gives the *editorial mercy* — the recognition that the *cosmic-scribe can erase-and-rewrite* certain decrees (the *namburbi* tradition), that *not everything written-down is final*, that *the tablet can be re-impressed before it dries*.

The shadow

Nabu has been *transmitted-into-the-prophetic-vocabulary-of-three-Abrahamic-religions* without acknowledgment of his Mesopotamian origin. The Hebrew *nāḇîʾ* ("prophet"), the Arabic *nabī* ("prophet"), the Aramaic *nabhīʾā* are *all etymological descendants* of *Nabû* — sharing the *announcer-of-divine-knowledge* root. *Mount Nebo*, where Moses died (Deuteronomy 34), is *named for the god Nabu* — a fact almost-never-mentioned in standard biblical-commentary, even though the linguistic-derivation is clear. The biblical Isaiah 46:1 polemic ("Bel boweth down, Nebo stoopeth") was *successfully appropriated* — Yahweh inherited Nabu's scribal-cosmic-recording register (the *Lamb's Book of Life* in Revelation 13:8, 17:8, 21:27 is *Nabu's Tablet of Destinies* transferred to the apocalyptic-Christian frame). The 19th-c. Assyriologist-recovery of the cuneiform-scribal tradition revealed that *the world's longest-continuous intellectual tradition* (the Mesopotamian scribal tradition c. 3000 BCE - 75 CE, when the last datable cuneiform tablet was inscribed) was *Nabu's patronage* — and this is *under-acknowledged* relative to the canonical attention given to Greek-and-Roman intellectual transmission. The Ezida temple at Borsippa was *speculatively-identified with the Tower of Babel* by Alexander Polyhistor c. 100 BCE and again by 19th-c. Western scholars — the modern Borsippa ruins (the *Birs Nimrud*) are a competing-candidate-site for the biblical Tower along with the Babylon Etemenanki. The 2014-2017 ISIS destruction of cuneiform-tablet-archives at the Mosul Museum included direct destruction of *Nabu-scribal-archives* — the same iconoclasm-against-the-scribal-tradition that the biblical Jeremiah ascribed to Nebuchadnezzar against the Israelite-prophetic tradition was, three millennia later, *enacted in reverse* against Nabu's own scribal-corpus.
