The hunter-archer · the orisha of the forest and the bow · the patron of justice (the hunter who never misses the guilty target) · the brother-and-companion of Ogún and Òsanyìn · syncretized in Cuba as Saint Norbert and in Brazil as Saint Sebastian (the arrow-saint, patron of Rio de Janeiro)

Warriors · Hunter-Archer of Justice · 11 of 12

The hunter-archer. The orisha of the forest, the bow, and *the patron of justice* (the canonical *hunter who never misses the guilty target* — Oshosi's arrow finds the wrongdoer wherever they hide). The brother-and-companion of Ogún (who cuts the path) and Òsanyìn (who knows the herbs of the forest) — the *forest-trinity*. The orisha whose register is *focused-aim* — distinct from Ogún's wide-cutting-machete and Oyá's storm-velocity.

Source textsThe Ifá literary corpus (Ìrọsùn-Òdí is the foundational Oshosi-Odu), the Pataki (Oshosi-the-hunter-who-shot-the-bird-that-stole-the-king's-corn — the foundational justice-narrative; Oshosi-banished-by-his-mother-Yemayá after he-accidentally-shot-her-trying-to-shoot-the-bird, which is why Oshosi lives-in-the-forest-and-not-at-the-mother's-house), William Bascom's Sixteen Cowries (1980), Pierre Verger's Notes (1957). Oxóssi in Brazil is one of the patron-orixás of Rio de Janeiro (the Saint-Sebastian syncretization is the city's namesake — São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro), and the January 20 Saint-Sebastian feast is a major Candomblé public event.

Who Oshosi actually is

Oshosi (Ọṣọ́ọ̀sì) is the orisha of *the hunter, the bow-and-arrow, the forest, and justice*. His register is *focused-aim* — the hunter's capacity to *track*, to *wait still for hours*, to *release-the-arrow-only-when-the-target-is-true*. He is the canonical *patron of justice* in the Yoruba pantheon — *Oshosi's arrow finds the guilty wherever they hide*, which is why Oshosi-petitions are made when someone has wronged the petitioner and the wrongdoer cannot be reached by ordinary means (the canonical *justice-Oshosi* register is a kind of *spiritual subpoena* — the arrow that will find the wrongdoer at the right time, regardless of how well they hide). The canonical Pataki: Oshosi is the son of Yemayá; he was the great hunter of the forest, sent by the king to shoot a bird that was stealing the king's corn. Oshosi tracked the bird for days, but each time he aimed, his mother Yemayá appeared between him and the bird. In some variants, Oshosi accidentally-shot his own mother, and was banished from the village to live in the forest alone (which is why Oshosi lives-in-the-forest-and-not-at-the-mother's-house — the canonical *banished-hunter* register). His companionship-with-Ogún: Ogún and Oshosi are the *brothers of the forest* — Ogún cuts the path through the bush, Oshosi takes the path and follows-the-game. Their consecration in Cuban Lukumí is often-paired (the *Warriors*: Eleguá, Ogún, Oshosi, and Osun-the-staff are received together as the foundational set of warrior-orishas given to every new Lukumí practitioner). His companionship-with-Òsanyìn: Oshosi knows the *animals* of the forest, Òsanyìn knows the *plants* — together they are the *full forest-knowledge*.

Iconography

A hunter in green-and-turquoise (or sometimes blue-and-yellow), holding a *bow and arrow* (the foundational Oshosi-implement). The *iron arrow-and-crossbow* of the Lukumí Warriors-set (the *Oshosi-arrow* is a small iron crossbow, kept on the household altar alongside Ogún's iron-implements). The hunting-horn. The number 7 (shared with Ogún). Sacred animals: the deer (the canonical Oshosi-game-animal), the bird (especially the bird-that-was-stealing-the-king's-corn), the dog (the hunter's companion). Sacred plants: the *anamú* (Cuban Oshosi-plant), the cedar, the espinillo. Syncretization: Saint Norbert (Cuba — the missionary-bishop with the bow), Saint Sebastian (Brazil — the canonical *arrow-saint*, depicted as a young man pierced by arrows; Saint-Sebastian is the patron-saint of Rio de Janeiro, whose city-name is São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro, making Oshosi *the orisha-patron of one of the largest cities in the Americas*).

How to invoke Oshosi

Monday (in some Lukumí lineages, shared with Eleguá and Ogún as the Warriors-trinity). Especially called for *tracking a hidden target* (the wrongdoer who has not been brought to justice, the truth that has been concealed), for *focused-aim* (when scattered-energy needs to be focused on one target), for *the hunt* (literal or metaphorical — the job-search, the deal-pursuit, the truth-investigation). Offer: deer-meat or smoked-fish, palm-oil, smoked-corn, the offering placed at the edge-of-the-forest (or by an actual archery-target on the altar). The invocation: *"Ọṣọ́ọ̀sì, oba ọdẹ, ẹni tó ńta ọfà sí ọkan ẹlẹ́ṣẹ̀, jọwọ ràn mí lọwọ"* — Oshosi, king of hunters, the one who shoots the arrow to the heart of the wrongdoer, please help me. Especially called when *justice has been refused by the human system* and the cosmic-arrow needs to be released.

In love

Oshosi in love is the partner whose register is *focused-aim* — the one who *will only release the arrow when the target is true*, whose love is *not scattered across many candidates but tracked patiently to one* (the canonical Oshosi-monogamy register, distinct from Shangó's three-wives or Eleguá's many-paths). The Oshosi-partner is the *patient tracker* — the one who knew you were the one *long before you knew yourself*, who waited for you to come into the clearing. The shadow is the Oshosi-partner whose hunt has become *predatory* — who has converted the canonical *patient-tracker* into the *stalker*, having forgotten that the hunter-of-justice does not stalk the innocent. The other shadow: the Oshosi-banished-from-his-mother's-house register — the partner who *cannot return to the village*, who has banished-themselves-from-intimacy because of some old harm (the accidental-shooting-of-the-mother in the Pataki), and who lives in the forest of solitude refusing the return-to-the-family.

In work

Oshosi in work is the *focused-tracker, the detective, the investigative-journalist, the bounty-hunter, the headhunter-recruiter, the deal-pursuit-specialist*. Oshosi-energy is the *figure whose value is in patient-tracking-then-perfect-aim*, not in machine-gun-spray-of-attempts. The shadow is the Oshosi-worker who has become *the obsessed-pursuer* — who cannot let-the-target-go even when the hunt should have been called-off, the *Ahab register* (Oshosi-going-bad). The other shadow: the Oshosi-leader who *cannot return to the village* — who has so committed to the solitary-forest register that they cannot work with the team, having converted the canonical *banished-hunter* into *the lone-wolf-by-choice* who refuses-all-collaboration.

The gift

Oshosi gives *focused-aim*. The arrow that *finds the guilty target wherever they hide*. The tracking that *closes the case nobody-else-could-close*. The patient-stillness that *waits for the right release-moment*. The justice-by-cosmic-subpoena when the human-system has failed. To receive Oshosi is to receive the *capacity to track without losing the trail*, and the *discipline to release the arrow only when the target is true*.

The shadow

Oshosi has been *quietly-overlooked* in popular witchy-Western literature (which prefers the more-photogenic Yemayá-Oshún register) — even though Oshosi is the patron-orisha of Rio de Janeiro (one of the largest cities in the Americas) and one of the foundational Warriors received by every Lukumí practitioner. The second shadow: the Saint-Sebastian syncretization has been *Catholic-overlaid* so strongly in Brazil that some Rio devotees of Saint-Sebastian do not know the African base. The third shadow: the *Oshosi-as-justice* register has been under-developed in modern diaspora practice; in a moment of mass-incarceration-and-systemic-injustice, the cosmic-subpoena Oshosi-arrow is exactly the petition that needs to be available.

3 key questions

  1. Where is my aim scattered — what target in my life have I been firing-machine-gun-spray at when Oshosi is asking me to *put down the rifle, pick up the bow, wait still in the forest, and release only when the target is true*?
  2. Where am I being asked to make the *Oshosi-justice petition* — what wrongdoer has gone unjudged by the human system, and is the cosmic-arrow waiting to be released through honest invocation?
  3. Where am I in the *banished-from-the-mother's-house* register — what old accidental-harm has kept me in the forest of solitude, and is it time to *return to the village* (the canonical Oshosi-return that some Pataki include as the second half of the narrative)?
