Four suit of pentacles · earth 🪙

🪢Four of Pentacles

A figure clutches one pentacle, with two under feet and one on the head — holding tight, security, miserliness.

upright meaning

A crowned figure sits clutching one pentacle to the chest, two pentacles beneath the feet, one on top of the head. The Four of Pentacles is the holding-tight card: security, savings, control of resources — but also miserliness, scarcity-grip, the fear of letting go that turns abundance into hoarding. The card asks the hardest question of money: are you holding because you have a real plan for these resources, or are you gripping out of fear that there will not be more? Sometimes the right move is exactly this hold (saving for a real goal, not impulse-spending). Often the card asks for an open hand — generosity, investment, letting some of the pentacles flow out so they can compound back.

upright vs reversed

upright (one-line)

A figure clutches one pentacle, with two under feet and one on the head — holding tight, security, miserliness.

reversed

Reversed, the grip loosens — generosity, releasing control, investing instead of hoarding, opening the hand. Or, less generously: financial loss after a long grip, or sudden over-spending after over-saving.

💞in love + at work

in love

Emotional miserliness — withholding affection, controlling the relationship through resource control, possessiveness. The Four of Pentacles in love asks: am I holding this person, or holding *onto* them?

in work

Saving aggressively, refusing to invest, controlling the budget tightly. The Four of Pentacles at work asks if the control is wisdom or if it is preventing the growth that comes from spending strategically.

🎁the gift & the shadow

the gift

Discernment about resource. The Four of Pentacles can be the wise hold — saving for a real future, not an imagined apocalypse.

the shadow

Hoarding. Scarcity gripping the hand shut. The miser who has more than enough but cannot enjoy it because the body is convinced loss is one bad month away.

🎴when you pull this card

what this card is asking of you

Open one hand. Spend on something life-giving. Give to someone who needs it more. The card is asking you to test whether your grip is wisdom or fear.

🔮questions to sit with

three honest questions

  1. What am I holding tightly that would compound if I let it flow?
  2. Where is my grip a real plan, and where is it scarcity dressed as prudence?
  3. What would generosity feel like in my life this week?
