Crab Apple
Malus pumila
Despondency or despair · the 8 dark-night remedies · 33 of 38
For the sense of being unclean — physical or moral. Bach's cleansing remedy for the soul that cannot accept its own form.
What Crab Apple actually treats
Crab Apple is Bach's cleansing remedy. The person who feels unclean — physically (skin, body, illness), morally (shame, "I am bad"), or aesthetically (perfectionism about appearance). Bach called it "the cleanser." The Crab Apple state can be small (obsessive hand-washing, fixation on a single flaw) or large (deep moral self-rejection). The remedy supports radical self-acceptance — not the manufacturing of self-love, but the dissolving of the conviction that the self is contaminated and needs to be scrubbed out.
The state it meets
Sense of being unclean. Obsession with physical or moral imperfection. Excessive washing, picking, cleaning. Disgust at one's own body. Perfectionism about appearance. "Something is wrong with me."
The shift it brings
Self-acceptance. The body is allowed to be a body. Imperfections become information, not stains. Cleaning returns to its proper function (hygiene) rather than its compulsive one (purification).
In love
Crab Apple in love is the partner who cannot believe they are loveable in their current body, who hides parts, who armors against being seen fully. The work is to let yourself be seen exactly as you are by one person — and survive their continued love.
In work
Crab Apple in work is the perfectionist who cannot ship because the work is never clean enough. The remedy supports the move from "this is not clean enough yet" to "this is what it is, and it is enough to send."
A 5-minute practice
Look at the body part you most reject in a mirror. Touch it gently. Say out loud: "This is part of me. It is allowed." Repeat daily. Self-acceptance, in Bach's view, is not philosophical — it is a relationship with the body, built one repetition at a time.

3 key questions
- What part of myself — body, history, choice, feeling — am I currently treating as a stain that needs to be removed rather than a fact that needs to be accepted?
- When did I learn that this part of me was unacceptable, and is the source still alive in me — or just an echo?
- What would change if I let this particular imperfection simply BE, without urgency, for one week?
