Pine
Pinus sylvestris
Despondency or despair · the 8 dark-night remedies · 27 of 38
For self-blame and guilt — the soul that takes responsibility for everything, including others' faults. Bach's remedy for over-ownership.
What Pine actually treats
Pine is Bach's remedy for the chronic self-blamer. The person who apologizes for everything. The one who takes responsibility for moods, weather, others' choices, things long past. Bach saw the Pine state as a misdirection of conscience — the inner judge has become indiscriminate, blaming the self for things outside its responsibility. The remedy returns conscience to its proper function: clear about real responsibility, free of the false guilt that paralyzes.
The state it meets
Chronic self-blame. Guilt for things outside one's control. Apologizing constantly. Takes responsibility for others' moods, others' choices. The inner judge in overdrive.
The shift it brings
Accurate responsibility. The capacity to own what is yours and release what is not. Guilt becomes information about specific actions rather than a chronic state of being. Forgiveness — of self — becomes available.
In love
Pine in love is the partner apologizing for things they did not cause — and therefore unable to apologize meaningfully for things they did. The work is to discriminate: real harm I caused vs. weather I am not responsible for.
In work
Pine in work is the manager taking the team's failures personally beyond what the role requires. The remedy supports the move from "everything is my fault" to "this specific thing I will own, this other thing belongs to its actual cause."
A 5-minute practice
For each guilt that arrives this week, ask: "Did I, specifically, cause this through my choice?" If yes, make repair. If no, release. Most Pine guilt collapses under this single question.

- What am I currently feeling guilty about that, if I am honest, was not actually my doing?
- When I have apologized recently, which apologies were for real harm I caused — and which were reflexive padding?
- If I let myself fully forgive myself for this one thing, what would I do with the energy I have been spending on the guilt?
