Scleranthus annuus

Uncertainty · the 6 doubt-remedies · 7 of 38

For wavering between two choices — the swing between options that never resolves. Bach's remedy for the pendulum mind.

What Scleranthus actually treats

Scleranthus is Bach's remedy for the mind that swings. Today A is obviously right; tomorrow it is just as obviously B. The pendulum cannot settle. The Scleranthus type is often described as the "indecisive optimist" — both options look good, the swing is internal rather than externally consulted (which is Cerato's territory), and the cost is the steady forward motion that requires committing to one path. Bach saw the remedy as bringing the still-point inside the swing.

The state it meets

Wavering between two paths. Monday certain of A; Tuesday certain of B; Wednesday back to A. Mood swings without external cause. Travel plans changed three times. The pendulum that cannot settle.

The shift it brings

The still-point inside the swing. The capacity to choose one option AND let the other go without grief. Decisions land and stay landed. The energy that was lost to wavering returns to the chosen path.

In love

Scleranthus in love is the partner swinging between staying and leaving every other day, with no event triggering the swing. The work is to commit to the question, sit with one answer long enough to test it, and notice the swing as the wound, not the wisdom.

In work

Scleranthus in work is the founder pivoting weekly, the writer rewriting the opening sentence forever. The remedy supports the commitment to ONE direction long enough for results to inform the next decision.

A 5-minute practice

When the swing arrives, write both options on a single piece of paper. Choose one. Set a 7-day moratorium: no re-deciding. Live as if the choice is final. Notice what happens to the swing itself when you refuse to feed it.

3 key questions

  1. What decision have I been re-deciding for weeks, and what would change if I let one option be final for just seven days?
  2. When I imagine myself one year from now having taken path A, then path B, which version of me looks more rested — even if less certain?
  3. What is the wavering itself costing me — and is the cost of that cost higher than the cost of being "wrong" about which path?
