38 · Opposition

Fire rising and lake sinking — the two moving in opposite directions; opposition that contains the seed of new combination.

The Hexagram

Hexagram 38, *Kuí*, is the image of fire rising while water sinks — two forces moving in opposite directions, unable to meet. The classical name is *Opposition*. The hexagram counsels: *in small matters, good fortune*. The lesson: this is a season of *misalignment*. Big undertakings will not work; small ones will. The wise behaviour is to keep the small things in good order while waiting for the larger alignment to return. *Kuí* also contains a hidden teaching: opposition often holds the seed of a new and stronger combination — the very fact that two parties are seeing things differently sometimes produces a third position neither could have found alone.

When you pull this hexagram

The current relational or organisational alignment is off. Big moves will not work. Tend the small details, keep the small honest things in order, and watch for the new alignment to emerge from the very opposition you are currently experiencing.

The changing lines

Line 6 is *isolated through opposition, one sees one's companion as a pig covered with dirt, as a wagon full of devils; one first draws the bow against him, then puts it aside; he is no robber, he wants to woo when the time comes; on going, rain falls; good fortune* — the warning that long opposition distorts perception; what looked like enemy is in fact ally. The rain is the reconciliation.

In love

You and your partner are not seeing the same thing right now. Do not fight to align by force. Tend the small things. Wait for the rain.

In work

The team is misaligned. Stop trying to force agreement. Keep the small things working. The new alignment emerges from the misalignment, not by overriding it.

The gift

*Productive opposition.* The recognition that some misalignments contain the seed of stronger future alignments — and that forcing premature agreement destroys the seed.

The shadow

Reading opposition as enmity. The line-6 distortion: long opposition makes the other look like a pig covered with dirt. Most opposition is not enemy; most opposition is misseen ally.
