The Hexagram
Hexagram 39, *Jiǎn*, is the image of water above the mountain — the steep path is blocked, the going is obstructed. The classical name is *Obstruction*. The hexagram counsels: *the south-west furthers; the north-east does not further; it furthers one to see the great man; perseverance brings good fortune*. The lesson: the direct way is blocked. The wise course is to *go around* (south-west, the easy route) rather than continue trying to push through (north-east, the steep blocked route), AND to *seek the great man* — find the wise counsel, the mentor, the third party who can see what you cannot.
