The Nakshatra

Mula (मूल, 'the root') is the nineteenth nakshatra, the opening 13°20' of sidereal Sagittarius, ruled by Ketu and presided over by Nirriti — the goddess of *dissolution, of the necessary destruction, of the calamity that clears the way*. The symbol is the *bunch of tied roots*, naming the digging-down to the source. Mula opens the spiritual quarter of the wheel: where the social half asked the soul to claim a place in the world, the spiritual half asks the soul to *uproot what has been claimed and find what is underneath*. Classical jyotish names Mula natives philosophical, fierce, deeply curious about origins (etymology, archaeology, depth psychology, root-cause analysis), often called through painful initiations that strip them down to what is essential. The Ketu rulership and the Nirriti deity together name the *dissolution-energy*: Mula people are sometimes the ones in whose lives things *fall apart so the deeper foundation can be reached*. The shadow is the *attraction to destruction for its own sake* — uprooting what need not be uprooted, mistaking demolition for liberation.

When the Moon transits Mula

The Moon transits Mula once a sidereal month — a window for *root-work*: getting to the bottom of the problem, the depth-therapy session, the genealogy research, the practice that goes to the source. Mula moon is bad for new ventures (the energy is dissolving, not building) and excellent for *finishing what needs to end*.

In love

Mula love is intense, root-going, often transformative — the partner who shows you what was buried in you, the relationship that uproots and replants you. Reversed: love-as-demolition — the partner who keeps tearing things down without rebuilding.

In work

Research at the root level (etymology, archaeology, deep psychology, theology, paleontology), depth-healing work, demolition-and-rebuild work, investigative journalism, philosophy. Mula shines wherever the work requires *going to the source*.

The gift

*Root-knowing.* The capacity to dig down past the surface explanations and find what is actually underneath — the etymology, the original cause, the foundation that needs to be reckoned with.

The shadow

Dissolution for its own sake. Mula unbalanced demolishes what need not be demolished — the relationship uprooted in a single bad season, the career left in a moment of philosophical exhaustion, the home dismantled on impulse. The Nirriti-side teaches: dissolution is *purposeful*; it clears for *what is coming*.
