The 27 Nakshatras — Vedic Lunar Mansions

How to read this wheel

The nakshatra wheel is the finer-resolution Vedic map. Where the 12 western tropical signs divide the ecliptic into 30°-wedges, the 27 nakshatras divide it into 13°20'-mansions — three nakshatras to every two zodiac signs, the actual rooms the Moon passes through every sidereal month. In jyotish (Vedic astrology), which nakshatra your Moon is in is the single most predictive birth-chart placement — more so than the Sun-sign that anchors western popular astrology. The Moon-nakshatra is sometimes called the *janma nakshatra* (birth-star); it names the lunar mansion the soul is born under and the texture of the inner life you actually live.

The three families. The 27 cluster into three groups of nine. Personal (1–9, Ashwini through Ashlesha) — the individual emerging, body and identity, the first quarter of the wheel from Aries through Cancer. Social (10–18, Magha through Jyeshtha) — relational life, status, partnership, the Leo-through-Scorpio quarter where the soul takes its place in the world. Spiritual (19–27, Mula through Revati) — dharma, dissolution, liberation, the Sagittarius-through-Pisces quarter where the soul completes the journey and returns to source. Every chart has placements in all three families; the dominant family names where the soul is doing its current work.

Each nakshatra has a deity, a ruler (a planetary intelligence called a *graha*), a symbol, a yoni (animal-association), and a gana (temperament — deva/manushya/rakshasa). These are not decorative. The deity names the archetypal force the nakshatra channels (Yama presides over Bharani's carrying, Vishnu over Shravana's listening, Pushan over Revati's safe passage). The ruler names the planetary flavor the nakshatra carries (Ketu opens Ashwini and Magha and Mula; Mercury rules Ashlesha and Jyeshtha and Revati). The symbol — the horse's head, the lotus, the funeral cot, the fish — names the image the nakshatra teaches with. The yoni and gana name the temperament: Vedic astrology uses these in marriage-compatibility (the famous *Ashtakoot* matching), but they also name the energy-signature of the nakshatra in any context.

The lineage is real. Nakshatras predate the western zodiac signs by a millennium — the Vedanga Jyotisha (the astronomical appendix to the Vedas) is dated c. 1400–1200 BCE, with the nakshatra system already articulated. The classical synthesis is in the *Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra* (BPHS, c. 4th c. CE in current form, attributed to the sage Parashara), with the *Phaladeepika*, *Saravali*, and *Jataka Parijata* as later medieval-renaissance refinements. The framing here draws from the classical texts and from contemporary practicing jyotishis. Honest note: jyotish was kept as a Brahmin-caste discipline for centuries, and the western-yoga commercial economy has flattened nakshatra into personality-quiz content.
