The 4-7-8 breath was developed by Dr. Andrew Weil (an integrative-medicine physician trained in classical yoga and ayurveda) as a deliberately simple, deliberately asymmetric pranayama that any patient could remember in a panic state. The architecture is intentional: a 4-count inhale (short enough to not trigger hyperventilation), a 7-count hold (long enough to begin CO₂ tolerance), and an 8-count exhale (long enough to fully empty the lungs and stimulate the vagus). The exhale being twice the inhale is the key — parasympathetic activation is most strongly triggered by *long exhales*, and 4-7-8 is the most accessible way to produce them at scale. Weil specifically named this breath as a *replacement for benzodiazepines* in mild-to-moderate anxiety and insomnia; he claims (and decades of clinical use bear out) that four cycles of 4-7-8, practised twice daily for six weeks, will retrain the autonomic nervous system's baseline. It is now the breath most-recommended by sleep-specialists for sleep-onset insomnia.
🌙4-7-8 Breath
Inhale 4. Hold 7. Exhale 8. The single most-recommended breath for falling asleep. The exhale is twice the inhale by design — the parasympathetic accelerator.
A modern hybrid based on the classical sama-vritti family, with deliberately unequal sides for parasympathetic dominance.
Modern — codified by Dr. Andrew Weil (Harvard, integrative medicine) in the 1990s; derived from classical yogic pranayama traditions
🌀what it does
the work this breath carries (and the contraindications)
Forces parasympathetic dominance via the long exhale. The 7-count hold is just long enough to begin CO₂ tolerance, which retrains the chemoreflex over weeks; the 8-count exhale fully empties the lungs and maximally stimulates the vagus nerve. Within 2-3 full cycles, heart rate drops 5-10 bpm, blood pressure eases, and the mind quiets. Used clinically for insomnia, panic-attack interruption, generalized anxiety, and pre-procedure calming. The four-cycle dose (about 60 seconds) is enough for most acute interventions; the twice-daily practice retrains the baseline.
🫁how to practise
rhythm · ratio · duration
Sit or lie down. Touch the tip of the tongue to the ridge behind the upper front teeth (this is the yogic *khechari mudra* lite — keeps the airway shape consistent). EXHALE fully through the mouth (a soft *whoosh* sound). Close the mouth. INHALE through the nose for 4 counts. HOLD the breath for 7 counts. EXHALE through the mouth, lips slightly pursed, with the soft whoosh sound, for 8 counts. That is one cycle. Repeat for 4 cycles. (Do not exceed 4 cycles in the first weeks — the technique is potent and the body needs to adjust.) Practice twice daily — once on waking, once on going to bed.

what this breath teaches
*Sleep without a pill.* The autonomic nervous system retrained from inside, by you, with no substance, no app, no purchase.
🌑the shadow
where the practice goes wrong
Mechanical counting. 4-7-8 is so simple that it can become a counting exercise that misses the body. The counts are scaffolding for the *experience* of the long exhale; if you are only counting and not feeling, the practice has collapsed into arithmetic.
💞in love & in work
A partnership in which the long exhale is welcomed — there is time for the breath to fully release before the next inhale begins. A relationship that has stopped sprinting. Reversed: a relationship in which neither partner has space to fully exhale; every release immediately consumed by the next demand.
The breath of the worker who has discovered that one minute of 4-7-8 is worth more than ten minutes of pacing. Particularly useful at end-of-day, to deliberately shift from work-mode to rest-mode; 4-7-8 is the bridge.

🔮questions to breathe with
before / during / after the practice
- When did I last let an exhale actually finish — all the way to the end — before grabbing the next inhale?
- Where in my life have I been treating my insomnia (literal or metaphorical) with substance when the breath would have done the work in six weeks?
- What would change if I practiced 4 cycles of 4-7-8 twice daily for six weeks — and let the baseline shift before I judged the technique?
