🌗Nadi Shodhana

The single most-recommended pranayama in modern integrative medicine. Closes one nostril, breathes in the other, switches sides. Balances the two halves of the nervous system.

Alternate-nostril breath. Nadi = subtle channel, shodhana = purifying.

Hatha Yoga — described in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika (ch. 2) and the Gheranda Samhita as the foundational pranayama

what Nadi Shodhana actually carries

The yogic anatomy holds that prana flows through two main subtle channels (nadis): Ida, on the left side (lunar, receptive, parasympathetic in modern terms) and Pingala, on the right (solar, active, sympathetic). Ordinary life is asymmetric — most adults breathe predominantly through one nostril at any given hour, and the nervous system swings accordingly. Nadi Shodhana is the practice of physically alternating which channel carries the breath, restoring balance between the two halves. Sushumna, the central channel, is said to open only when Ida and Pingala are equalized — making this the gateway practice for any deeper meditation. Modern research (Bhavanani 2014; Telles 2013) shows measurable rise in heart-rate variability, drop in blood pressure, and improved prefrontal cortex coherence after just 10 minutes. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika names this as the first pranayama any serious practitioner is expected to master — before the heating techniques are ever attempted.

🌀what it does

the work this breath carries (and the contraindications)

Balances the two halves of the autonomic nervous system. Within 2-3 minutes, HRV rises, blood pressure eases, and prefrontal cortex coherence increases. The felt result is "alert calm" — parasympathetic tone elevated without sympathetic tone collapsing. The safest pranayama for all populations: pregnant women, elderly, post-surgical, anxious, and chronically ill can all practice without contraindication.

🫁how to practise

rhythm · ratio · duration

Sit upright. Bring the right hand to the face: thumb resting near the right nostril, ring finger near the left. CLOSE the right with the thumb. INHALE through the LEFT, slow, 4 counts. CLOSE both nostrils, HOLD for 2-4 counts (skip the hold if new). OPEN the right (ring finger closes left), EXHALE through the RIGHT for 6 counts. INHALE through the right for 4. CLOSE both, HOLD. OPEN left, EXHALE for 6. That is one full round. Build to 10 rounds. Slow is the whole practice — if the breath is rushed, the benefit collapses.

🎁the gift

what this breath teaches

*Balance.* Both halves of the nervous system held in equal tension — alert without anxiety, calm without dullness.

🌑the shadow

where the practice goes wrong

Mechanical performance. Nadi Shodhana done in a rush, as a checkbox, with shallow short breaths — looks like the practice but does none of the work. Slow is the entire point; if you do not have 10 minutes to do it slowly, do something else.

💞in love & in work

in love

A partnership in which both partners take turns leading and following — left and right alternating, neither dominant. The breath of a couple that has learned to switch without resentment. Reversed: a relationship stuck on one side, one partner doing all the receiving or all the activating, the channel calcifying.

in work

Deep focus work that needs sustained attention without burnout. Five minutes of Nadi Shodhana before a two-hour focus block produces measurably longer sustained attention than caffeine, without the crash. Particularly useful before any work that requires both creativity (Ida) and execution (Pingala) — writing, design, strategy, integration.

chakra
third eye
Third Eye — Nadi Shodhana balances Ida and Pingala, which meet at the ajna (third eye). The classical opening practice for any meditation that targets the third-eye chakra.
mudra
vayu
Vayu — the air-element mudra. Nadi Shodhana is the breath that consciously moves the air element through both channels; Vayu Mudra is the gesture of that same element.
sound
anxiety
Anxiety Relief — pair when anxiety is rooted in nervous-system imbalance rather than situation. Ten minutes of Nadi Shodhana before the audio doubles the felt-shift, because the system is already in coherence when the audio meets it.
zodiac
gemini
Sign whose energy aligns with this breath.

🔮questions to breathe with

before / during / after the practice

  1. Which nostril am I dominant in right now — and what does that tell me about which half of myself has been doing the work today?
  2. Where in my life have I been running on Pingala alone (push, force, activity) or Ida alone (retreat, receptivity, dream)?
  3. What would it take for me to sit for the full ten minutes — not five, not three — and actually let the channels balance?
