The sun-goddess. The Great August Kami who Shines from Heaven. The ancestress of the Japanese imperial house (in unbroken genealogical line per the Kojiki, the descent from her grandson Ninigi through the legendary first emperor Jimmu c. 660 BCE through Emperor Naruhito today as the 126th). The withdrawer into the Ama-no-Iwato rock-cave when Susanoo defecated in her sacred weaving-hall — and the lured-back-out by Ame-no-Uzume's ecstatic dance, the foundational myth of Japanese performing arts. The giver of the three Imperial Regalia: the Yata-no-Kagami mirror (still housed at Ise), the Yasakani-no-Magatama jewel (Imperial Palace Tokyo), the Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi sword (Atsuta Jingū Nagoya). The kami whose Naikū at Ise has been rebuilt every 20 years for 1,300 years in the Shikinen Sengū continuity.
Who Amaterasu actually is
Amaterasu (天照, "shining-from-heaven") is the *cosmic-sun* of the Japanese pantheon — and uniquely among great-world-pantheons, the sun-deity is *feminine* (the only major comparable feminine-sun-deity is the Norse Sól, and the only major comparable solar-ancestress-of-the-ruling-line is the Egyptian Re-of-Pharaoh; Amaterasu combines both). She is born from Izanagi's purification-washing of his *left eye* at Ahagihara in southern Kyushu after his return from Yomi the land-of-the-dead — Susanoo from the *nose* and Tsukuyomi from the *right eye* are her brothers. She rules Takamagahara (the High Plain of Heaven). The central narrative is the *Iwato-gakure* (the rock-cave withdrawal): Susanoo, in storm-rage, flays a piebald horse and throws it backwards through the roof of her sacred weaving-hall (the Kojiki preserves the version where one of her weaving-women is killed by the falling shuttle); Amaterasu in grief and rage withdraws into the Ama-no-Iwato (the heavenly rock-cave), and the world goes dark. The eight-million kami gather at the Ame-no-Yasu-no-Kawara (the heavenly-tranquil-river-bed) to plan; Ame-no-Uzume (the dawn-dancer) performs an ecstatic, half-naked, foot-stamping dance on an overturned tub; the kami laugh; Amaterasu, curious about the laughter, opens the cave-door a crack; Tajikara-o (the strong-armed kami) pulls her out; the cave is sealed with a sacred rope (the origin of the *shimenawa* boundary-marker on every shrine). She then sends her grandson Ninigi-no-Mikoto down from heaven with the three Imperial Regalia and the command to rule the land, founding the imperial line. Her central shrine is the *Ise Jingū Naikū* (the Inner Shrine, Mie Prefecture), which has been rebuilt-exactly every twenty years since 690 CE in the *Shikinen Sengū* ritual-renewal (the next rebuilding is 2033) — the longest unbroken architectural-ritual continuity in world religious history. The kami-body of Amaterasu at Ise is the *Yata-no-Kagami* (the mirror), which is *never seen* — even the high-priestess (the Saishu, traditionally an imperial princess) approaches it veiled. The Amaterasu-register is the *cosmic-feminine-solar*, the *imperial-ancestral*, the *withdrawn-and-coaxed-back*, the *seen-only-through-the-veil*.
Iconography
Almost never anthropomorphically depicted in classical Shinto art (this is itself iconographically significant — the *yorishiro* mirror is the kami-body, and direct representation was traditionally avoided). When depicted (medieval picture-scrolls, modern manga): a regal court-woman with the *jewel-and-mirror* held at the chest, often emerging from a rock-cave with a halo of sun-rays. In Buddhist *honji-suijaku* readings (medieval period through 1868), she is identified with *Mahāvairocana Buddha* (Dainichi Nyorai, the cosmic-sun-Buddha of the Shingon and Tendai schools) — this identification produced a vast medieval Mikkyō-Shintō iconographic synthesis (the *Ryōbu Mandala of the Two Realms* mapped onto the Ise inner and outer shrines), almost entirely destroyed in the 1868 Shinbutsu-bunri edicts. Colors: white (the imperial register, the Ise-shrine register), gold (the solar register), polished-bronze-mirror. Sacred objects: the *Yata-no-Kagami* mirror, the *shimenawa* sacred rope (commemorating the cave-sealing), the *mikoshi* portable-shrine. Sacred sites: Ise Jingū Naikū (the central shrine — visited by ~8 million pilgrims annually); Amanoiwato Jinja (in Takachiho, Miyazaki — the alleged cave-site, in the volcanic Kyushu cosmography of the Tenson kōrin heavenly-descent); Amaterasu shrines in every prefecture (the *jingū* honorific is reserved for shrines of imperial-rank, of which Amaterasu has the most).
How to invoke Amaterasu
Amaterasu is invoked at *dawn* — facing east as the sun rises (the classical greeting *kashiwade* of two hand-claps + bow + silent prayer + two hand-claps + final bow, the *ni-rei ni-hakushu ichi-rei* of standard shrine-etiquette). The canonical liturgical invocation is the *Toshigoi-no-Norito* (the New Year prayer for the year's harvest, preserved in Engishiki Book 8). The annual *Niinamesai* (new-rice-tasting festival, 23 November — also Japan's Labor Thanksgiving public holiday) is the imperial offering of the first rice-harvest to Amaterasu and the eight-million kami, performed personally by the emperor at the Imperial Palace and at Ise; the once-in-a-reign *Daijōsai* (the great-thanksgiving-enthronement, last performed November 2019 for Emperor Naruhito) is the inaugural Niinamesai of a new reign and the most-elaborate Shinto ritual that exists. Offer: *sake* (rice-wine), *omiki* (sacred-rice-offering), *tamagushi* (sakaki-branches with paper streamers), white-flowers, polished-mirror-reflection. Especially called by: those at moments of *cosmic-feminine-leadership*, those who have *withdrawn into a rock-cave* and need to be *coaxed back into the light* (the depression-and-recovery register), those entering *imperial-ancestral or genealogical lineage-work*, those whose work is the *seen-only-through-the-veil* (the mirror-not-the-image, the substrate-not-the-surface). Pilgrimage: the Ise-mairi pilgrimage was the *most-popular pilgrimage in Tokugawa Japan* (the 1830 *okage-mairi* mass-pilgrimage involved an estimated 4-5 million people — one-sixth of the entire Japanese population at the time).
In love
Amaterasu in love is the *cosmic-feminine-solar* — the partner whose light is the warmth-and-fertility of the household-as-cosmos, whose withdrawal into the rock-cave is the most-frightening event in any relationship (and whose coaxing-back-out requires the *eight-million kami in council* — that is, the whole community gathering at the river-bed with their full ingenuity, not just the one anxious-partner trying alone). The Amaterasu-partner is the one whose *light is so central* that her depression *darkens the entire cosmos*, and whose return requires not argument but *ecstatic celebration* (Ame-no-Uzume's laughing dance) and *curious mirror* (the partner who is willing to be *coaxed by what is reflective* rather than *demanded by what is direct*). The shadow is the partner who has been *expected to provide cosmic-light without limit* — the *imperial-ancestral burden* of being the *source-of-warmth for everyone* with no rock-cave allowed, no withdrawal permitted, no Niinamesai recognized. The other shadow: the relationship that has tried to *demand-the-mirror-be-shown* (the partner who, like a tourist at Ise, has wanted to *see* the *Yata-no-Kagami* directly when the entire structure of the relationship has been *the mirror-is-honored-by-being-veiled*).
In work
Amaterasu in work is the *cosmic-imperial-ancestress* — the founder-figure whose lineage-continuity is the legitimacy of the entire institution, whose presence in the institution's mythology is the *single-most-important-fact* and whose absence (even by withdrawal-for-grief) would *darken the entire enterprise*. The Amaterasu-figure is the founder-CEO-emerita whose continued-association with the company is the cosmic-warrant, the cultural-anchor whose *single visit per year* (the Niinamesai-Daijōsai register) is the most-important institutional ritual. The shadow is the institution that has *appropriated the imperial-ancestral-claim* without the *cosmic-feminine-solar substance* (the State-Shinto problem — using Amaterasu's name to legitimize what she did not authorize, c. 1868-1945). The other shadow: the founder-figure who has been *demanded to remain in the rock-cave* (forced retirement, push-out, palace-coup) when the cosmic-cycle would naturally have a *return-via-eight-million-kami-and-Uzume's-dance*. The Amaterasu-leadership is *withdrawn-and-coaxed-back*, not *commanded-out-by-force*.
The gift
Amaterasu gives the *cosmic light of the imperial-ancestress* — the *unbroken lineage* (the 126-emperor genealogical continuity), the *Shikinen-Sengū twenty-year rebuilding cycle* (the gift that *renewal-by-exact-rebuilding is more-faithful-than-preservation*), the *mirror as kami-body* (the gift that *the substrate is honored by being veiled, not displayed*), the *Iwato-gakure-and-return* (the gift that *withdrawal is honored, not pathologized — and the return requires the eight-million-kami-in-council*). To receive Amaterasu is to receive the *cosmic-feminine-solar-leadership-register* — the founder whose continued-presence is the legitimacy of the institution, the imperial-ancestress whose mirror is *honored by not being seen*. The gift is also the *Niinamesai-Daijōsai annual-and-once-in-a-reign cyclical-thanksgiving* — the recognition that *the cosmic-leader and the rice-harvest are the same offering, made annually*.
The shadow
Amaterasu has been *politically weaponized into near-unrecoverable distortion* by the 1868-1945 State Shinto period. The Meiji oligarchs, in the Shinbutsu-bunri edicts of 1868, deliberately destroyed the c. 1,200-year-old Buddhist-Shinto honji-suijaku synthesis (in which Amaterasu had been identified with Mahāvairocana Buddha and her shrine network had been integrated with Buddhist temples), creating a "pure Shinto" (Kokka Shintō, State Shinto) that was administratively-defined as "not a religion" (so it could be made universally compulsory under the 1889 Constitution's nominal religious-freedom clause). The Meiji Emperor was declared a *living kami* in direct descent from Amaterasu (the 1889 Constitution Article 3: "The Emperor is sacred and inviolable"), and the Amaterasu-Ninigi-Jimmu genealogical line was made the *literal historical-foundational claim* of the Japanese state used to justify expansion in Korea 1910, Taiwan 1895, Manchuria 1931, China 1937, and the Pacific War 1941-45. The Ise Grand Shrine was elevated to the head of a national shrine-ranking system (the *shakaku* of 1871), and visiting Ise was made an obligation for emperor, ministers, and schoolchildren. After surrender, the December 1945 Shinto Directive of the Allied Occupation formally abolished State Shinto, and Emperor Shōwa's 1 January 1946 *Ningen Sengen* "Humanity Declaration" formally renounced the imperial-divinity-claim — but the formal Shinto-imperial-rituals (the once-in-a-reign Daijōsai, the annual Niinamesai, the Shikinen Sengū at Ise, performed November 2013 and scheduled 2033) continue under unresolved Article-20 separation-of-church-and-state ambiguity. The contemporary Jinja Honchō (the Association of Shinto Shrines, postwar-1946 federation of ~80,000 shrines) holds politically-conservative positions (Nippon Kaigi affiliation, opposition to female imperial succession, support for constitutional revision, public-funding of imperial-Shinto-rituals) that critics argue reproduce State-Shinto patterns. The further shadow: the Western New-Age reduction of Amaterasu to "Japanese sun-goddess generic" (popular in 1980s-2010s neo-Pagan feminist reclamations of "goddess pantheons of the world") flattens the specifically Japanese-imperial-ancestral content into a sun-goddess archetype that the actual Amaterasu-cult would not recognize. The deepest shadow: the use of Amaterasu in 21st-century *uyoku-dantai* (Japanese ultranationalist) propaganda continues, and any non-Japanese practitioner who invokes Amaterasu without naming this political shadow risks reproducing it.
