The dawn-dancer. The kami who solved the *cosmic-rock-cave-crisis* (Amaterasu withdrawn in grief, the world in darkness) by *performing an ecstatic dance on an overturned tub at the heavenly-river-bed* — half-naked, foot-stamping, the *eight-million kami in roaring laughter* — and luring Amaterasu out of the cave to investigate the unprecedented joy. The *first performer in Japanese mythology* — patroness of kagura, gigaku, bugaku, noh, kabuki, butoh, and every subsequent Japanese performing art. The encounterer of *Sarutahiko* at the Eight-Crossroads of Heaven during the heavenly-descent — solving the cosmic-stand-off by *the laughing-confrontation with bared-breast* (and becoming his wife in the process). The ancestress of the *Sarume* hereditary priestess-clan of the imperial court.
Who Ame-no-Uzume actually is
Ame-no-Uzume (天宇受売, "Heavenly-Striking-Woman") is the *cosmic-dancer-and-mirth-maker* of the Japanese pantheon — the kami whose ecstatic-comic-erotic-dance is the *foundational mythological event of Japanese performing arts*. The central narrative is the *Ame-no-Iwato* rock-cave-recovery (see Amaterasu #1): when Amaterasu withdrew into the cave and the world went dark, the eight-million kami gathered at the *Ame-no-Yasu-no-Kawara* (the heavenly-tranquil-river-bed) to plan; their solution required *Uzume's dance*. The Kojiki describes the dance precisely: she binds her sleeves with the *himo-kage* sleeve-cord made of the moss-and-lily of Mount Kagu, places the leaves of the masaki-tree on her hair as a chaplet, gathers the bamboo-grass of Mount Kagu, *overturns a tub before the cave-door, climbs on it, and stamps until it resounds* — and *as she becomes possessed, she exposes her breasts and pushes her skirt-cord down to her genitals*. The eight-million kami at this *roar with laughter so loud that the heavens shake*. Amaterasu, hearing the unprecedented joy from inside the dark cave, calls out: "Why does the great-host of kami laugh, with the world in darkness?" Uzume replies: "Because we have a kami greater than you, and we rejoice with her" — and the kami present a *mirror* (the Yata-no-Kagami, soon to become an Imperial Regalium) so that when Amaterasu peeks out, she sees her own reflection and, thinking it is the new kami, opens the door further; Tajikara-o the strong-arm pulls her out, the cave is sealed with the sacred rope, the world is lit again. This is the *foundational kagura-narrative* — every kagura performance at every Shinto shrine is, in the lineage-claim, a re-performance of Uzume's dance. The medieval *miko* (shrine-maiden) tradition, the *Sarume* hereditary priestess-clan of the imperial court (Uzume's direct descendants per the Kojiki), the *medieval otokoyama* tradition, the *kagura-mai* sacred-dance, the *gigaku* and *bugaku* court-dances, and via the medieval *sarugaku* the entire *noh* and *kabuki* tradition trace genealogically to Uzume. The second narrative is the *Sarutahiko encounter*: when Ninigi descended from heaven to earth with the Imperial Regalia, his path was blocked at the *Ame-no-Yachimata* (the Eight-Crossroads of Heaven) by an enormous earthly-kami named Sarutahiko (see #7 below), whose nose was seven hand-spans long, whose eyes shone like the eight-handed mirror, and whose stature was such that *no heavenly-kami dared approach*. The eight-million kami debated who should confront Sarutahiko; Uzume volunteered, *exposed her breasts, faced him with a laughing-grin*, and asked his name. Sarutahiko, charmed-and-disarmed, identified himself and offered to guide Ninigi to earth. Uzume and Sarutahiko later married. The Uzume-register is the *cosmic-mirth-as-cosmic-recovery*, the *ecstatic-erotic-comic-dance as the foundational performing-art*, the *laughing-bared-breast-confrontation as the disarming of stuck-cosmic-stand-offs*.
Iconography
A *miko* (shrine-maiden) in white-and-red robes with the *kagura-suzu* (sacred-rattle-bells) in one hand and the *sakaki* (sacred-tree) branch in the other, mid-dance with one foot stamping. In the Iwato-cave narrative-scrolls: half-naked, hair-flying, bare-breasted, on the overturned tub before the cave-door with the eight-million kami in roaring laughter behind her. In the Sarutahiko-encounter scenes: facing the seven-span-nosed earthly-kami with a *laughing-grin and exposed breasts*. Colors: white (the miko-robe), vermilion-red (the miko-hakama), bamboo-green (the Mount Kagu vegetation), gold (the laughter-resound). Sacred objects: the *kagura-suzu* (sacred-rattle-bells), the *sakaki* branch with paper streamers, the *overturned tub* (the foundational-stage of Japanese performing arts), the *himo-kage* sleeve-cord of Mount-Kagu moss. Sacred sites: *Sarutahiko-jinja* in Ise (Uzume and Sarutahiko are jointly enshrined as the patron-couple of *michibiki* "guidance" — Sarutahiko as the guide-of-the-heavenly-descent, Uzume as his disarming-wife); *Tsubaki Ōkamiyashiro* in Mie Prefecture; *Sakaki-jinja*; and every shrine that hosts a *kagura* performance (Uzume is the *patron of the kagura-stage itself*).
How to invoke Ame-no-Uzume
Uzume is invoked at the *moment of a cosmic-rock-cave-stand-off* — when *the light has gone out of the world, the eight-million kami are gathered at the river-bed in council, and the question is "who will perform the dance that lures the light back out?"* The canonical liturgical invocation is the *Chinkonsai* (魂祭, "spirit-pacification festival") performed annually at the imperial court in mid-November (the day before Niinamesai), in which Sarume-clan priestesses re-perform a stylized version of Uzume's rock-cave-dance to ensure the *continued vitality of the emperor's spirit-soul* (the chinkon = "calming/pacifying of the soul" being one of the few imperial Shinto rituals with documented archaic-shamanic continuity). Offer: *sake* (the celebratory-register), *kagura-dance-performance* itself as offering, *bamboo-grass* of Mount Kagu (or any sacred-mountain), *sakaki-branches with paper streamers*, *laughter* (the eight-million-kami-roar). Especially called by: those whose cosmic-task is to *lure the withdrawn-Amaterasu out of the rock-cave* (the partner or family-member or institution-leader in depression-grief-withdrawal whom *only ecstatic-comic-celebratory invitation* will draw back), those whose work is *performing-arts in any register* (theatre, dance, comedy, music, ritual-performance — Uzume is the patron-kami of *the stage itself*), those who must *confront a seven-span-nosed stuck-cosmic-figure* with the *laughing-bared-breast-disarming* (the negotiation that succeeds because of *charm-not-force*).
In love
Uzume in love is the *cosmic-ecstatic-erotic-comic-partner* — the one who *solves the stuck-cosmic-stand-off by laughing* (the partner-with-Sarutahiko archetype: arrives at the Eight-Crossroads where everyone-else-has-failed to negotiate the seven-span-nose, exposes-her-breast and laughs, and *the stuck-figure becomes the husband*). The Uzume-partner is the one whose *first dance* is the *foundational event* of the relationship — the partner-of-the-rock-cave-recovery whose ecstatic-celebratory mode is the cosmic-instrument that pulled the previous-Amaterasu-of-your-life out of withdrawal. The shadow is the *Uzume-required-to-perform-without-end* — the partner who has been treated as *responsible for cosmic-mirth-on-demand*, expected to *lure-Amaterasu-out-of-the-rock-cave every Tuesday* without ever being allowed her own withdrawal-into-a-cave. The other shadow: the *Uzume-flattened-into-comic-relief* — the partner whose ecstatic-erotic-comic-cosmic-priestess function has been reduced to *jester-on-call* by a partner who has not recognized that *she is the patroness of the whole performing-art of the relationship*.
In work
Uzume in work is the *cosmic-performing-arts-patron and stuck-stand-off-resolver*. The Uzume-figure is the *first-employee whose dance-on-the-overturned-tub is the founding-event of the company's culture*, the head-of-communications whose comic-erotic-celebratory mode is the *cultural-anchor that the institution would lose its light without*, the *negotiator-of-stuck-cosmic-stand-offs* who arrives at the Eight-Crossroads where everyone-else-has-failed and *resolves it by laughing-and-charm*. The Uzume-register is also the *kagura-stage-itself* — the recognition that *performing-arts in any register (creative work, presentation, theatre, comedy) is a cosmic-function that descends from the foundational Iwato-dance*. The shadow is the institution that has *exploited the Uzume-figure for cosmic-mirth-on-demand* (the workplace that expects the *culture-keeper* to be *constantly performing rock-cave-recovery* for every withdrawn-Amaterasu in the org), or that has *flattened the Uzume-function into "team morale event-planning"* (failing to recognize that the cosmic-pattern is the *foundational-event of the entire performing-arts tradition*).
The gift
Uzume gives the *cosmic-mirth-as-recovery*. The gift is the *Iwato-dance-method*: when the cosmic-light has gone out (Amaterasu in withdrawal), the eight-million-kami in council, the recovery-mechanism is *not argument, not demand, not force* but *ecstatic-erotic-comic-celebratory dance that makes the withdrawn-figure curious about the unprecedented joy*. The gift is the *Sarutahiko-disarmament-method*: when a seven-span-nosed stuck-cosmic-figure blocks the path, the resolution is *laughing-charm-bared-breast* — *the disarming-confrontation that converts the obstacle into the husband*. The gift is also the *foundational-performing-arts-itself* — the recognition that *the kagura-stage is a cosmic-instrument* and that *every theatrical performance, every comic monologue, every dance, every musical concert is in lineage to Uzume's overturned-tub at the heavenly-river-bed*. The gift is finally the *recognition that ecstatic-erotic-comic-cosmic-priestess is one role-bundle*, not three separate roles — that the cosmic-mirth-maker is also the cosmic-erotic-figure is also the cosmic-priestess, and the modern-attempt to split these three into separate compartments is a *post-Iwato distortion*.
The shadow
Uzume has been *progressively-sanitized over fifteen centuries*. The Kojiki (712 CE) preserves the *fully-erotic dance* (sleeves bound, breasts exposed, skirt-cord pushed down to the genitals) without embarrassment — Ō no Yasumaro records it as cosmic-foundational-narrative. By the Heian period (794-1185), aristocratic-court-kagura had stylized the dance into the *graceful-decorous miko-performance* that survives in modern shrine-kagura, with the erotic-content visible only to those who *know the Kojiki source-text* behind the now-decorous performance. The medieval *kagura-mai* and *bugaku* further-formalized the lineage. The Tokugawa Confucian-influence (1603-1868) further-distanced the polite court-performance from the *bared-breast-foot-stamping* original — and the 19th-c. State-Shinto reformers found the original-narrative *unsuitable for inclusion in school-textbooks* (the Meiji-era school-text Kojiki excerpts entirely-omit the erotic details of the rock-cave-dance). The 1868 Shinbutsu-bunri did not directly attack Uzume (she had no Buddhist-syncretic counterpart to dismantle), but the Meiji *redefinition of Shinto as state-ritual-religion* effectively *removed the ecstatic-shamanic register* from official-Shinto. The 20th-c. Western reception (especially the Joseph Campbell tradition) read Uzume as *an instance of the universal-rebirth-of-the-sun-via-comic-festival pattern* (paralleling Demeter-Baubo in the Eleusinian Mysteries and the Egyptian Hathor-as-Cat-of-Re festival), which captured something real but *generalized away* the specifically Japanese performing-arts-foundational-narrative function. The further shadow: the *modern miko* (shrine-maiden) tradition, in its currently-existing form, is *radically more decorous* than the Uzume-lineage-claim would suggest — modern shrine-miko are typically young unmarried women in carefully-modest white-and-red robes performing carefully-modest decorous kagura, with the Uzume-foundational *bared-breast-and-laughing-eight-million-kami* register entirely-absent. The deepest shadow: the *Sarume hereditary court-priestess clan* (Uzume's direct descendants per the Kojiki) survived in some form through the Heian period but was *progressively-marginalized* by the male-dominated Heian court-ritual-system, and by the early-modern period the original female-shamanic-Uzume lineage had been *absorbed into the more decorous miko-as-temple-attendant role*, with the cosmic-priestess function effectively-lost.
