The Nakshatra
Ardra (आर्द्रा, 'the moist one') is the sixth nakshatra, sidereal Gemini 6°40'–20°00', ruled by Rahu (the north node, the soul's hunger) and presided over by Rudra — the storm-god of the Rig Veda, the fierce, weeping, wild face of Shiva, the deity who *howls* (Rud) at the threshold of every great transition. The symbol is the *teardrop* — the moisture that softens the husk of the seed so the green can break through, and equally the tears that come when an old self is dying. The presiding star is Betelgeuse, the red giant in Orion's shoulder.
