50 · The Cauldron

Wind feeding fire — the sacred vessel; the cauldron in which the raw becomes the cooked, the human becomes the wise.

鼎 Dǐng Fire above Wind King Wen #50

The Hexagram

Hexagram 50, *Dǐng*, is the image of the cauldron — the bronze ritual vessel of ancient China, used both for cooking food and for sacred offering. The classical name is *The Cauldron*. The hexagram counsels: *supreme good fortune; success*. The lesson: the cauldron is the vessel of *transformation* — what is raw enters, what is cooked emerges. Spiritually, this is the image of the body itself, the relationship, the practice — the vessel in which the raw human becomes the wise human. The wise behaviour is to *keep the cauldron well* — feed the fire, hold the form, let the cooking complete.

When you pull this hexagram

You are in the cauldron — a vessel of transformation that requires steady fire and held form. Do not interrupt the cooking. The raw becomes the cooked through *patient containment*.

The changing lines

Line 5 is *the cauldron has yellow handles, golden carrying rings; perseverance furthers* — the well-formed vessel; everything is in order. Line 6 is *the cauldron has rings of jade; great good fortune; nothing that would not act to further* — the most auspicious final line in the book; the vessel is precious, the work is whole.

In love

The relationship is the cauldron. Both partners are being transformed. Do not interrupt the cooking. Hold the form.

In work

The practice, the company, the long project is the cauldron. Steady fire. Held form. The wisdom is in the patience of containment.

The gift

*The vessel of transformation.* The recognition that some processes can only happen inside a held container, and that the holding itself is the work.

The shadow

Lifting the lid. Interrupting the cooking. The impatience that opens the cauldron before the transformation completes — the meal is wasted.
