The Hexagram
Hexagram 53, *Jiàn*, is the image of wood growing on the mountain — gradual, slow development. The classical name is *Development*. The hexagram counsels: *the maiden is given in marriage; good fortune; perseverance furthers*. The lesson: this is the season for *gradual* progress — the tree growing on the mountain takes years, but its roots become deep and its trunk becomes unbreakable. The temptation to skip stages must be resisted; what is grown gradually lasts.
