20 · Contemplation (View)

Wind moving over earth — the high view that sees the whole field; contemplation as the season's work.

觀 Guān Wind above Earth King Wen #20

The Hexagram

Hexagram 20, *Guān*, is the image of wind moving over the earth — the high vantage from which the whole field is visible. The classical name is *Contemplation*. The hexagram counsels: *the ablution has been made, but not yet the offering; full of trust they look up*. The lesson: this is a season of *seeing*, not yet of acting. Climb the mountain, look at the whole field, study the patterns. The action follows from the seeing; if you act before you see, the action will be wrong.

When you pull this hexagram

A season of contemplation is on you. Resist the urge to act. Climb high. See the whole field. The action will follow naturally from the seeing — but only if the seeing is done first.

The changing lines

Line 5 is *contemplation of my life; the superior man is without blame* — the central inquiry: what is *my* life, viewed from the high vantage? Line 6 is *contemplation of his life* — viewing not just one's own life but the lives of others one is responsible for.

In love

Step back. View the whole pattern of the relationship from the high vantage before taking the next move.

In work

Stop iterating tactical moves. Climb the mountain. Look at the whole strategy. The right tactic emerges from the high view.

The gift

*The high view.* The recognition that some seasons are for *seeing*, and the action that follows the seeing is wiser than any action that preceded it.

The shadow

Contemplation as endless analysis. Looking forever and never acting. *Guān* is the *first* movement; the offering follows.
