Fire at the foot of the mountain — beauty that adorns, never replaces; grace as the right relation of form to substance.
The Hexagram
Hexagram 22, *Bì*, is the image of fire illuminating the mountain — beauty arising at the foot of the substantial. The classical name is *Grace* (or *Adornment*). The hexagram counsels: *success; in small matters, it is favourable to undertake something*. The lesson: grace, beauty, adornment have their place — they make small matters succeed — but they cannot substitute for substance. The mountain comes first; the fire that illuminates it second. Form follows substance, not the other way around.
When you pull this hexagram
A season of *Bì* asks you to attend to the form, the presentation, the surface — but only as adornment of substance, never as substitute. Polish the work; do not mistake polish for the work.
The changing lines
Line 6 is *simple grace; no blame* — the highest form of adornment is the simplest. The white that lets the substance speak. Excessive ornamentation defeats *Bì*.
In love
Attend to the small graces — the cooked meal, the clean room, the noticed detail. Adornment of love is real. But do not let beauty substitute for the harder substance.
In work
Polish the proposal. Care for the presentation. Make it beautiful — but only after the substance is there.
The gift
*Right adornment.* The recognition that beauty is a real force in small matters and a real corruption when it tries to do the work of substance.

Adornment without substance. The beautiful proposal with nothing behind it. The performance of competence without the competence.
