The Hexagram
Hexagram 31, *Xián*, is the image of the lake resting on the mountain — receptive yin atop strong yang, the two responding to each other. The classical name is *Influence (Wooing)*. The hexagram counsels: *success; perseverance furthers; to take a maiden to wife brings good fortune*. The lesson: the season is one of *mutual influence* — not domination, not submission, but the natural response of two well-formed beings. The classical commentary names this as the foundation of right partnership: yang reaches, yin receives, both are changed.
