Lightning and thunder together — the obstruction that must be bitten through; firm justice applied at the right moment.
The Hexagram
Hexagram 21, *Shì Kè*, is the image of fire and thunder together — illumination and decisive action combined. The classical name is *Biting Through*. The hexagram counsels: *success; it furthers one to let justice be administered*. The lesson: there is an obstruction in the field — a person, a situation, a behaviour blocking the rightful flow — and it must be *bitten through*, not negotiated around. Justice in the I Ching is not vindictiveness; it is the firm application of correction at the right moment to a situation that has gone past mediation.

The changing lines
Line 3 is *bites on old dried meat and strikes on something poisonous; slight humiliation; no blame* — the obstruction has been there too long; the bite must happen, but the long delay has spoiled some of the meat. Line 6 is *his neck is fastened in the wooden cangue; humiliation* — what was not bitten through in time becomes the obstruction the bearer himself is trapped by.

The hard conversation has been postponed too long. The bite must happen. Cleanly, without cruelty, and now.
In work
The team member who has been performing badly. The vendor who has been failing. The contract that has gone bad. *Shì Kè*: bite through, justly.
