23 · Splitting Apart

Mountain on top of earth — the high thing being eroded from below; the season of subtraction.

剝 Bō Mountain above Earth King Wen #23

The Hexagram

Hexagram 23, *Bō*, is the image of the mountain being eroded from beneath — five yin lines below, one yang line at the top, about to be displaced. The classical name is *Splitting Apart*. The hexagram counsels: *it does not further one to go anywhere*. The lesson is severe: this is a season of subtraction. What was high is being eroded. Pushing forward will not help. The wise behaviour is to *withdraw, conserve, and wait* — and to recognise that the erosion is part of a larger cycle that will, eventually, return (which is hexagram 24).

When you pull this hexagram

A season of subtraction is on you. Things are being lost — relationships ending, projects collapsing, identities outgrown. *Bō* counsels: do not fight the erosion; tend the small remaining ground; the cycle returns.

The changing lines

Line 6 is *a great fruit still uneaten; the superior man receives a carriage; the house of the inferior man is split apart* — the hidden line of *Bō*: in the deepest erosion, the seed of the next cycle is preserved. The fruit is still uneaten. The return is in the falling.

In love

The relationship may be in subtraction. Do not fight what is leaving. Tend what remains. The cycle will turn — through the loss, not around it.

In work

The project, the role, the company is in decline. Do not throw more force at what is dying. Conserve. Tend the seed that will be the next chapter.

The gift

*Honest subtraction.* The recognition that some seasons are for *losing well* — releasing what is leaving rather than fighting it.

The shadow

Refusing the subtraction. Throwing more force at what is dying. The hexagram's exact counsel: *it does not further one to go anywhere*.
