䷚27 · Nourishment (Providing Nourishment)
The image of an open mouth — what enters and what is spoken; nourishment of body, mind, and word.
The Hexagram
Hexagram 27, *Yí*, is visually the image of an open mouth — two yang lines top and bottom, four yin lines between, like the upper and lower jaws around the empty mouth. The classical name is *Nourishment*. The hexagram counsels: *perseverance brings good fortune; pay attention to the providing of nourishment and to what a man seeks to fill his own mouth with*. The lesson is dual: pay attention to what enters you (food, media, company, ideas) AND what proceeds from you (the words you speak, the way you nourish others). The mouth in the I Ching is the *exchange point* of life; both directions matter.
When you pull this hexagram
The hexagram is asking you to examine your nourishment — both what enters you and what proceeds from you. What you read, who you talk to, what you say, who you feed. The exchange point is asking for attention.
The changing lines
Line 1 is *you let your magic tortoise go and look at me with the corners of your mouth drooping — misfortune* — the warning of envying others' nourishment instead of tending one's own. Line 6 is *the source of nourishment; awareness of danger brings good fortune; it furthers one to cross the great water* — the deepest nourishment is the one that becomes a source for others.
In love
What are you feeding the relationship — your tone, your attention, your words? What are you taking from it? Both directions matter.
In work
What are you consuming professionally — what books, what mentors, what feedback? What are you producing — what quality of work, what tone in conversation? The mouth.
The gift
*Attention to exchange.* The recognition that the mouth runs both ways and both directions of nourishment require care.
The shadow
One-sided attention. Obsessing about what enters (the perfect diet, the perfect input) while ignoring what proceeds (the careless words, the harm spoken). Or the reverse.

- What am I feeding myself — physical, emotional, intellectual — and is it nourishment or noise?
- What is proceeding from me — my words, my work, my attention — and is it nourishment or harm?
- Where is my magic tortoise — my own source of nourishment — that I have let go of in order to envy another's?
