Pure creative force — the season the river runs uphill, six dragons rising in turn.
The Hexagram
Hexagram 1, *Qián*, is the image of pure yang — six unbroken lines, heaven above heaven, the dragon force that originates everything. The Wilhelm-Baynes translation calls it *the Creative*, the Zhou-yi calls it *the originating*. It is the season the world is on your side: ideas arrive, doors open, the project that was stuck for a year suddenly moves. The Confucian wing of the I Ching ("the Great Treatise") says of this hexagram: *the great originating, success, furthering through perseverance*. The classical commentary attaches a dragon-image to each line — the dragon hidden in the deep, the dragon rising on the field, the dragon flying in the heavens — naming the rhythm of the rising creative force as it learns to use itself.
When you pull this hexagram
You have been given a season of green-light — what was blocked is unblocking, what was hidden is being seen. Do not waste it on small targets. Aim at the work the soul actually came here to do. The classical caution: *the dragon overflies its station* — pride is the only failure mode of *Qián*.
The changing lines
A changing 6 in the top line is the famous *arrogant dragon will have cause to repent* — the warning that pure rising force, taken past its proper limit, falls. Most other lines change toward hexagrams of consolidation; the lesson is that pure creativity must, at some point, take form.
In love
A relationship in the *Qián* season is being given creative permission — the move you have wanted to make, the truth you have been afraid to say. Make it. Reversed/shadow: pride that mistakes its own desire for the other's permission.
In work
The project, the launch, the leap — the world is supplying wind. Build, ship, claim. Do not under-aim. The classical text does not warn against ambition; it warns against ambition without rhythm.
The gift
*Originating force.* The recognition that you have been given access to the source-energy that brings new things into being. Use it for something that matters.
The shadow
Pure rising force without form. The dragon that flies past its station — pride, overreach, mistaking the season for the self. *Qián* without *Kūn* (the Receptive) is a flood that destroys the field it could have watered.
