䷍14 · Possession in Great Measure
Fire above heaven — sun at noon, the brightest visibility; great possession that must be held with humility.
The Hexagram
Hexagram 14, *Dà Yǒu*, is the image of fire above heaven — the sun at the height of the sky, illuminating everything. The classical name is *Possession in Great Measure*. The hexagram counsels: *supreme success*. The lesson: when you have come into great possession — material, social, creative, spiritual — the *manner* of holding it matters more than the having. Hold it with humility; share it; let the light of your noon illuminate others rather than blinding them. *Dà Yǒu* is one of the most auspicious hexagrams in the book, but its auspiciousness is conditional on the bearer's character.
When you pull this hexagram
You are in a season of abundance. Resources, opportunities, recognition — the noon sun is on you. Hold it well. Share generously. The wisdom of *Dà Yǒu* is that great possession reveals character; what you do with the abundance becomes the chapter.
The changing lines
Line 3 is *a prince offers it to the Son of Heaven; a petty man cannot do this* — the warning that great possession in the hands of a small character corrupts. Line 6 is *he is blessed by heaven; good fortune; nothing that does not further* — the rare line of pure auspiciousness, awarded to the bearer who held the great possession with humility.
In love
The relationship is full — affection, trust, presence. Receive it without small jealousies or small possessivenesses. Share the warmth outward.
In work
A season of abundance — resources, recognition, opportunity. Use it well. Lift those around you. The leader who hoards abundance during *Dà Yǒu* is remembered as small.
The gift
*Generous holding.* The recognition that abundance is given partly to be shared — and that the manner of holding it determines whether it grows or dissipates.
The shadow
Hoarding abundance. Becoming small in the noon sun. The leader who, given much, gives little.
