13 · Fellowship with Men

Fire rising into heaven — like-minded people gathering around a clear cause; the open-air alliance.

同人 Tóng Rén Heaven above Fire King Wen #13

The Hexagram

Hexagram 13, *Tóng Rén*, is the image of fire rising into heaven — light visible from afar, gathering those who can see it. The classical name is *Fellowship with Men* (or *Community*). The hexagram's counsel: *fellowship with men in the open — success; it furthers one to cross the great water; the perseverance of the superior man furthers*. The hexagram celebrates *open* community — alliances built in daylight on shared cause, not secret factions, not closed tribes. The fellowship that wins is the fellowship that anyone of right intent can join.

When you pull this hexagram

A community is forming. Find your people, build the alliance — but build it openly, not as a clique. The cause must be visible. The fellowship that lasts is the one whose principle is clear enough that newcomers can recognise it from afar.

The changing lines

Line 2 is *fellowship in the clan — humiliation* — the warning that closed-tribe fellowship (only my people, only my caste, only those who agree) is the failure mode of *Tóng Rén*. Line 5 is *first weeping, then laughing — after great struggles, they meet* — fellowship that survives a hard test is the deepest kind.

In love

The relationship is part of a wider fellowship — friends, family, community. Honour the wider field; do not isolate the relationship into a closed bunker.

In work

The alliance, the partnership, the team — build it openly. State the cause. Let it be visible. The closed clique loses; the open fellowship grows.

The gift

*Open alliance.* The recognition that the strongest community is the one whose principle is visible enough that newcomers can find it without permission.

The shadow

Closed-clan fellowship. Only my people. Only those who agree with me. The hexagram's warning at line 2 is exactly this: *fellowship in the clan — humiliation*.
