䷋12 · Standstill (Stagnation)
Heaven and earth no longer speaking — the season the channels close; the wait inside the standstill.
The Hexagram
Hexagram 12, *Pǐ*, is the inverse of *Tài* — heaven *above* earth, which again sounds correct but is in fact the failure mode: the great and the small no longer flow into each other, the channels close, the season stalls. The classical translation is *Standstill (Stagnation)*. The hexagram counsels: *evil people do not further the perseverance of the superior man; the great departs, the small approaches*. The wise behaviour in *Pǐ* is not to push — pushing into a closed channel breaks the channel — but to *withdraw, conserve, and wait for the season to turn*.
When you pull this hexagram
You are in a *Pǐ* season. The doors are closed. The relationships are not communicating. The project is stalled and pushing harder makes it worse. Withdraw, conserve, do not waste resources fighting the season. *Pǐ* turns — every standstill turns.
The changing lines
Line 5 is *standstill is giving way; good fortune for the great man; perish, perish! — bind it to a cluster of mulberry shoots* — the moment the season is *just about* to turn; consolidate, hold tight to the strong roots, do not relax too soon.
In love
The conversation is closed. Pushing it open right now will only deepen the stall. Withdraw. Tend your own ground. The conversation that is not possible today will be possible later. Reversed: using *waiting for the season to turn* as license for endless avoidance. *Pǐ* turns; *avoidance* is forever.
In work
The deal is stuck. The launch is stalled. The boss is not communicating. Pushing harder is breaking the channel. Withdraw to the work you can do. Conserve. The season turns.
The gift
*Strategic withdrawal.* The recognition that there are seasons where the wise move is to stop pushing and tend the smaller, stronger ground.
The shadow
Withdrawing forever. Calling avoidance *waiting for the season*. The hexagram's precise teaching is that *Pǐ* turns — if your standstill never turns, the problem is not the season.
3 questions to sit with
- What channel in my life is closed right now that I have been wasting force trying to push through?
- What can I do during the standstill that strengthens me for when it turns?
- Is this actually a season — does it have a turning point — or have I been calling permanent avoidance "*Pǐ*"?
