䷊11 · Peace
Heaven below earth — the rare alignment when the small and the great work together; the season of peace.
The Hexagram
Hexagram 11, *Tài*, is one of the most-loved hexagrams in the classical text — the image of heaven below earth, which sounds backwards, but is precisely the point. When the receptive yin is *above* the creative yang, the two flow into each other; the great descends to meet the small, the small rises to meet the great. The classical translation is *Peace*. The hexagram's counsel: *the small departs, the great approaches — good fortune; success*. Peace in the I Ching sense is not absence of trouble; it is *correct alignment* — when the right things are in the right places and the natural rhythms can move.
When you pull this hexagram
A season of *Tài* is upon you — the great and the small are in the right relationship, the obstacles are dissolving, what was blocked is moving. Use it. Plant the seeds. Build the relationships. Make the bold moves you have been postponing. *Tài* does not last forever — the I Ching is precise about this — but while it is here, it is here.
The changing lines
Line 6 is the famous *the wall falls back into the moat; do not use the army; from your own town, the orders come; perseverance brings humiliation* — the warning that *Tài* always tips into its opposite (#12) eventually, and the wise course is to consolidate near home rather than overreach as the season turns.
In love
The relationship is in alignment. Receive it. Do not waste *Tài* on small grievances. Build the long thing. The small departs; the great approaches.
In work
A breakthrough season. The doors are open. Walk through them. Build the partnership, ship the project, claim the territory. Use the alignment.
The gift
*Right relationship.* The recognition that peace is not nothing — it is the precise condition under which everything good becomes possible.
The shadow
Wasting *Tài*. Spending the season of peace on small grievances, small jealousies, small fears — and waking up after the season turns realising you did not build during the time you could have built.
3 questions to sit with
- What is in alignment in my life right now that I have been failing to receive?
- What am I postponing that *Tài* has actually given me permission to build?
- When the season turns — and it will — what will I wish I had built while peace was here?
