10 · Treading (Conduct)

Treading on the tail of the tiger — the careful step in dangerous company; conduct as protection.

履 Lǚ Heaven above Lake King Wen #10

The Hexagram

Hexagram 10, *Lǚ*, is the image of stepping carefully — the foot on the tail of the tiger, the lake under heaven. The classical name is *Treading (Conduct)*. The hexagram's most-cited line: *treading on the tail of the tiger; it does not bite the man — success*. The lesson is precise: in dangerous company, in delicate situations, in encounters where one false move would be fatal, *conduct itself is the protection*. The careful, respectful, attentive step preserves you in conditions where force would be punished.

When you pull this hexagram

You are in delicate company — a powerful person, a dangerous situation, a relationship at the threshold. The hexagram says: *conduct yourself well and you will pass through unharmed*. Watch the tone. Watch the timing. Watch the small respect.

The changing lines

Line 3 is *a one-eyed man can see; a lame man can tread; he treads on the tail of the tiger; the tiger bites — misfortune* — the warning that overconfidence in delicate conditions is fatal. Know your limits.

In love

A delicate moment in the relationship. The tone of the conversation matters more than the content. Conduct itself is the protection. Reversed: walking on eggshells forever — at some point real conversation must happen. Treading is the *crossing*; do not turn it into the destination.

In work

You are dealing with a powerful client, a delicate negotiation, a high-stakes meeting. *Conduct itself is the protection*. Tone, timing, small respect. The tiger does not bite.

The gift

*Right conduct as armour.* The recognition that in delicate situations, *how* you do something matters more than *what* you do.

The shadow

Treading forever — eggshells as a permanent state. At some point the careful step must become the honest step; perpetual deference is its own failure.
