䷅6 · Conflict
Heaven rising, water sinking — two forces moving apart; the litigation that wins, but at the cost of the relationship.
The Hexagram
Hexagram 6, *Sòng*, is the image of heaven and water moving in opposite directions — two parties whose interests have diverged to the point of contention. The classical counsel is sober: *if one is sincere and meets with obstruction, the way is barred; halfway, good fortune; carrying it through to the end, misfortune*. The hexagram does *not* counsel conflict-avoidance — it acknowledges that contention is real and sometimes necessary — but it counsels stopping at the right moment. The litigation that you press to the bitter end will *win* and cost you the field. The disagreement that you walk away from at *halfway* preserves the relationship and your own integrity. *It furthers one to see the great man* — find the wise third party (mediator, mentor, elder) before you escalate. *It does not further one to cross the great water* — do not start the new venture with this person while the conflict is unresolved.
When you pull this hexagram
You are in a contention. The hexagram's precise counsel is *halfway, good fortune* — the disagreement, named honestly and stopped before total war, is the right shape. Pushing to the end is the failure mode.
The changing lines
Line 4 is *unable to engage in conflict, one returns to fate, changes attitude, finds peace in perseverance — good fortune*. The hexagram's most-quoted teaching: the win is not in pressing through, it is in *changing one's own ground* and finding peace there.
In love
The fight is real. The temptation is to *win*. The hexagram says: name the disagreement, hear what is being said underneath it, and stop at *halfway*. The marriage that survives is the one where neither partner needs to deliver the killing blow.
In work
The contractual dispute, the colleague-conflict, the contested decision: stop at halfway. Find the third party. Do not press through. The case you would win in court is the case that ends your reputation.
The gift
*The half-way stop.* The recognition that the strongest position in a conflict is sometimes the one that names it cleanly and walks away before total war.
The shadow
Pressing through to total victory. Winning the litigation and losing the field. The friend who has never been wrong in a single argument and has no friends left.

- What am I in conflict with right now — and have I passed the halfway-stop point?
- Who is the wise third party I have not yet consulted?
- What does it cost me to *win* this — and is the cost more than the victory is worth?
